Welcome
This professional nursing website was purposely created for the nurses of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to access and share information in strengthening networking and collaboration amongst nursing professionals in PNG and internationally, whilst learning and developing new skills and knowledge by gaining insights into nursing as a frontline profession in addressing the health needs and concerns of individuals across PNG and the world. It is therefore critical to access and share information through important mediums like the internet, especially for nurses in developing countries such as PNG. This is because nurses in PNG often do not have access to vital practical information and nursing literatures, such as: nursing journals, books, newsletters, symposiums publication reports etc. The lack of avenues to accessing and sharing information has limited nurses in PNG to progress and advance in their nursing care practice and career pathways over the years. Thus, nursing has been more or less stagnant and subdued although society has changed and new health challenges such as lifestyle diseases and epidemics are on the rise, as population growth increases every year. Therefore nurses, as the frontline health professionals, have to be better equipped to meet these growing health challenges and demands of our society today.
Nursing is no doubt an important profession and it is changing and experiencing a shift from a more traditional practice to contemporary advanced practices in many parts of the world. These changes are made to meet the demands of the changing health systems (new policies introduced, new ideas and new approaches emerging)and the epidemiological transitions to address. This means new skills and knowledge are needed to be developed and expanded. The world is constantly moving and evolving therefore it is about time nurses in PNG, are no longer restricted but reach out to extract vital information that is conducive, applicable, reliable and cost effective and blend them into the nursing practice using available resources, to improve and provide quality care that is beneficial to the stakeholders and society at large.
If nurses especially in PNG miss out on the opportunities of advancing and developing new skills and knowledge, then it is likely that we will get into a rut whereby we will continue to carry out duties routinely and traditionally and lag behind nursing practice compared to other countries. This can be detrimental to the PNG government’s long term vision of establishing a healthy, happy, and wealthy nation by the year 2050 (Vision 2050). Further, nurses in PNG are likely to lose touch with the demands of the modern health system and changing disease trends, and other health issues of our time. If we don’t adapt to implementing contemporary nursing care such as, applying evidence-based nursing practices, utilizing research and accessing e-health nursing to enhance learning and development, the danger is that nurses in PNG will steadily become more out of touch with what is required of us to provide better and improved health care for a growing PNG population. It is therefore vital for nurses to continue developing in our profession in every way possible to be prepared and in tune with the changing lifestyle diseases and general health concerns of individuals; it is known as “Incessant Professional Development”.
Participating online and learning from what is shared and critically discussing health issues (within the nursing perspective) amongst colleagues is worth engaging in.
Therefore, access the ambai website and log in as registered member to access newsletters, online PNG Nursing Published Articles, and participating in online discussion forums which will be professionally and personally enriching and beneficial to enable changes and improve health care and service deliveries.
Nurses in PNG are encouraged to effectively access internet, because it is accessible, reliable and convenient source of e-literature for professional learning and development.
Computer illiteracy and costly internet access is one of the many challenges faced by nurses in PNG, hindering their professional development...however, despite the limitation, ambai encourages; self respect and development..."You are called to serve, do not wait to be served" or you will wait forever...
Thank you
