Wellbeing

Health education is an essential tool of good health.  A great deal of ill-health in Papua New Guinea is due to inefficiency of health education programs. Lack of information for the public to access. High illiteracy rate mostly amongst the rural and urban poor dwellers limits the people to understand and grasp well the importance of information/message delivered. Also, Socio-economic and cultural factors has an impact upon the populations' wellbeing. Moreover, people are often also ignorant of simple rules of hygiene and good Nutrition. However, every health worker is a health educator, and with it comes responsibility to ensure the population are informed about the significance of their wellbeing.

Prevention is Better then Treatment

  • This site will provide health tips and benefits of the varieties of food on land and sea that are consumed locally. Purposely to enhance nursing knowledge and its application of information to improve and provide quality nursing care.
  • Papua New Guinea maybe limited to valid basic health care services, and reporting high statistics of mortality and morbidity rates, yet, despite the poor health status, the country boasts of its fertile and extensive land mass with its natural resources. We are blessed with variety of food crops on land and food access from the sea. Without the land we cannot survive, our livelihood depends on it. If our people are health educated or rather well informed of the significance of their health, I believe our health facilities will be quite empty most of the time.

As the saying goes “What we eat is what we are/become”. If the population are made aware of the essentials and benefits of what they grow, fish, hunt, or either purchase, and how to prepare and cook, will be vital for maintaining good health also speed recovery and prevent illnesses, for more info: www.health.harvard.edu and  www.whfoods.com

No one can give an excuse for not eating an Orange, because oranges are one of the common fruits grown and accessed in this beautiful country of PNG. Oranges come from the line of citrus fruits and is originated from China, and better grown in hot places (Tropical), but in Papua New Guinea it is commonly grown in the highlands1. There are different varieties of oranges including the mandarin, seedless naval orange, valencia, blood orange and the bitter seville orange (often used for making marmalade)2.

Often oranges are not eaten as it should be. When eating an orange the inner peel (mesocarp) of the 2nd layer (white part under the skin) should also be eaten including the pulp fiber, if it is chewable. Oranges should be eaten fresh and not kept overtime because it may lose its potency1.

The oranges contents almost most of the vitamins for a good health, vitamins such as, A, B1 ,B2, B12, C & E, Protein, Iron, Niacin, Zinc, Potassium, Folate, Fiber, Phosphorus, Calcium and more… Professor Step conducts most of his studies on vitamins said; “A natural orange is superior to any pharmaceutical preparation as a source of vitamin C”1.

Benefits1,2:

  • Its high content of folate is essential for proper development of the fetal nervous system.
  • It is an antioxidant, and is necessary to boost the capabilities of the defensive cells (Leukocytes or white blood cells) to avoid certain cancers.
  • Its content of citric acid (activates vitamin C) assists in eliminating of toxics sediments such as uric acid.
  • Contain pectin which assists in lowering blood cholesterol levels
  • Helps make the blood more fluid and improve circulation, because of the flavonoids in oranges, leading to low risks of developing arteriosclerosis, arterial thrombosis and heart diseases.
  • Also, lowers Blood Pressure.
  • Essential for healthy skin because of its Vitamin C content.

Therefore, we are encouraged to consume oranges often as we can upon regular bases, and that includes eating the all 3 layers of the orange, remember to wash it first. The preferable orange to eat the all 3 layers is the seedless naval orange.
